The role and the record
As Director of Design Technology, Stine owns the firm's software, standards, and training, and sits on the Design Performance team producing the energy models, daylighting calculations, and life-cycle assessments the firm delivers for permit and certification. He leads Investigations, Lake Flato's research program, setting its agenda and publishing its findings, and since 2025 has served as the firm's Data & AI Leader.
Before San Antonio he spent seventeen years at LHB in Duluth, Minnesota, the last fifteen as Design Technology Manager for a 250-person multidiscipline firm, where he co-created the MEP Productivity Pack now used by more than 300 companies. His earlier years at SJA Architects put him on the teams of record for buildings by César Pelli and Carol Ross Barney.
“Of the millions of people who use Revit, Dan truly is in the 1% of the 1%. The breadth and depth of his knowledge, spanning integrated multidisciplinary design to nascent areas like energy and lighting analysis, as well as his hand in shaping the very development of Revit and tools like Autodesk Insight, is truly exceptional.”
“Frequently, I find those in a BIM specialist role are enamored with technology itself, rather than what it can enable. Dan instead focuses on what technology can do to deliver better projects. His willingness to share knowledge far exceeds anyone we've interacted with in the role of BIM manager.”
“We can count on Dan to provide actionable and thoughtful feedback throughout the development lifecycle, from participating in our research, to early beta testing, to using it in production and sharing his experiences at our user conference.”
Four roles at Lake Flato
The LHB years
Design Technology Manager for a 250-person multidiscipline firm: architecture, interiors, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering, civil, landscape, and survey, plus industrial groups in power, paper, mining, and pipeline. He researched new technology, decided what was worth adopting, and wrote the standards and training so the rest of the firm could use it.
